News of the tragic passing of Leonard Dillon naturally overshadows all else this week.
Over the past year or so, we have been in regular contact with Leonard's management and desperately hoped the two Ethiopians titles scheduled for the close of this month would see release during the legendary singer-songwriter's lifetime.
It is therefore with extremely heavy hearts that we announce their issue, which would have been put on hold were it not for the full support of Leonard's management who view their release as long overdue reminders of one of the greatest talents Jamaica has produced.
The first of these two releases is the Ethiopians' debut album, 'Engine 54', comprising numerous self-produced Rock Steady classics, including the group's international best-seller, 'Train To Skaville'. Originally released some 42 years ago, the album is to be finally represented with original sleeve artwork, while the Jamaican analogue tapes have been used for its mastering.
The full track-listing is as follows:
The second of the Ethiopians' titles due for release at the end of October is the 7" limited edition single, featuring two self-financed tracks recorded by Leonard and his regular singing partner, Stephen Taylor shortly after the 1968 release of the 'Engine 54'.
The recordings, on which the duo were backed by some of Jamaica's leading session players, had been intended for issue on their own imprint, but unfortunately financial difficulties ensured all but two of the sides cut that day saw issue - and those on a strictly limited blank-labelled 7" pre-release single.
Now, over four decades later, the top-side of that ultra-rare 45 - the excellent 'I'm Shocking' - is finally made available once more, with the recording coupled with the even rarer gem, 'Sign The Cheque'.
We sincerely hope that both this single and the CD collection will go some way to ensuring Leonard's talent and legacy will be remembered for many, many years to come.
