Historically Significant Maytals Track To Be Released

Published By: Administrator Date: March, 21 2011 Genre: Reggae

On June 12th 1968, Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert, Henry 'Raleigh' Gordon and Nathaniel 'Jerry' Mathias McCarthy, aka the Maytals, attended a recording session for Beverley's Records producer, Leslie Kong, which was to make musical history.

The first song cut that day was the energetic 'Do The Boogaloo' - an Toots Hibbert original inspired by the popular Latin music style that had all the hallmarks of a sure-fire hit. But while it was agreed the number had enormous potential, it was suggested that in keeping with the developing up-tempo Rock Steady style prevalent at the time, its appeal might be further enhanced were it to promote an exciting new dance.

So it was that 'Boogaloo' was hastily dropped in favour of 'Reggay', the meaning of which was ambiguous at best, with its selection made on little more than a whim by the ever inventive Toots. The result was one of the most influential recordings of all-time and while 'Do The Reggay' topped the local charts and provided the name generally applied to all Jamaican music thereafter, the original cut was forgotten.

Now, at long last, the initial version of the song is to be made available as an exclusive 7" for Record Store Day on April 16th, with the track coupled with a long lost, previously unissued funky version of the group's 'Bim Today, Bam Tomorrow', cut at the same session.

Issued in strictly limited numbers on premium quality, heavy duty vinyl, the record will be available from all participating UK stores - for details, check the following link:

@Lauren, you have vindicated my attitude if your husband queued for 2 hours. The first copy on eBay hit £64 which seems ironic considering that a 43 year old original pressing of Do The Reggay would sell for less than that.

Trojan have now said "A lucky few of those unable to make it to an independent record store today may yet have the opportunity to obtain a copy of the record, with further information on that to follow soon." Hopefully that will be good news for some of us, though not the person who has just shelled out £64!

My husband has been collecting/enjoying & playing Trojan years prior to Universal taking them over. This morning he queued for nearly 2 hours only to be told that the shop hadn't been 'allocated' any.
What the hell are Trojan/Universal playing at? If they intended to p*** off a loyal customer them they've truly succeeded.
And seeing the item on ebay for crazy prices REALLY displays Trojan's lack of support for the people who have supported them.
Again, I agree with David Hampson, perhaps the eBay prices can be pushed through the roof by way of protest.
    Well done Trojan/Universal. NOT.

@Martial - I go to record stores every week. When I go they don't make me queue round the corner and then tell me they have sold all the things I want to buy to themselves and their mates but I can buy the records off them if I go and look on eBay. Yes they have some nice special releases but if I have to go and get a job in a record shop to get them I guess they are just not special enough. Anyhow, your 7" series are only available by mail order so it seems a little two-faced saying "if you prefer the company of your computer..." If Trojan/Universal really feel that way why don't you distribute your vinyl through record shops the rest of the year?

This morning I went to a record fair in London instead, I thought about making the short journey to Rough Trade but decided that the patronising attitude of making customers queue like a bunch of muppets for something that isn't available to them except through eBay was not for me.

Anyhow, there is the first one of these on eBay right now, currently on 12.50 and I'm going to push it higher. Satisfied Trojan/Universal?

My local participating stores in Record store Day have not been offered this vinyl so I have no way of getting a copy until one possibly appears on ebay. Thanks very much Trojan for looking after regular customers - not!

As a Dj and a long time Trojan records follower i'm more than upstetted by today "collectionist" Trojan politic , if Trojan rcs is known in the world it also come from the fact that in the ten last years trojan reissues were availaible in all the good record sellers in Europe ...
There are big number of good indie record seller everywhere , with biggest reissues you'll support more of them and give a chance to more fans to know all these incredible tracks...450 ? Call it a joke , i'm sure that the youngsters that are fascinated by Trojan would download less if they 'd have a chance to get the vinyl easier...

Sorry David, but i don't think it's wasting time, money and sweat to go to the record stores... except if you prefer the company of your computer...
    Peace.

My experience from last year is most of these exclusive releases go to the staff and the ones that are left over go to friends of the staff the day before RSD. Don't waste time, money and sweat with RSD, they'll all come up on eBay if you want one that badly.
