Rootikal Friday 14th August
On 14th September Joey Jay makes his Rootikal debut and we're truly looking forward to his selection.
For those who don't know, Joey has been championing roots sounds for a very long time now - back in the late 70s he started the Great Tribulation sound system (so named due to it needing constant maintenance) with his brother Norman. The sound's GT decorated boxes would help the brothers to name the rebirth of the set as Good Times, which has been a cornerstone at Notting Hill Carnival for over 30 years now. While Norman embraced the sounds of urban Amercia, Joey stuck with his love of Jamaican music, his shows on Kiss FM, both as a pirate and as a legal station, were essential listening for London-based heads. Looking for the better things in life, Joey moved to Ghana in 2002, so this really is a very rare opportunity to hear him dig into his dub basket. We're also honoured that Joey has given us exclusive access to some of his legendary Kiss FM interviews and these will be posted on www.rootikal.net over the coming weeks and months - together with an in-depth interview with the man himself.
The rise of Rodigan continues to grow at a phenomenal rate, with the last couple of years having seen him embraced by many people discovering his unique talents for the first time. From dubstep nights in east London to massive festival crowds the world over, there seems to be no stopping the takeover by the man known as Ramjam. At Rootikal, Rodigan will be carrying a diverse selection to cover all bases, from classic rocksteady to the latest pre-releases plus, of course, the legendary dub-plate specials that have helped him dominate soundclashes over the last three decades. It's always a pleasure and an education to have Rodigan in the house.
The Rootikal crew of David Hill, Stuart Patterson and Mr Faso, together with guest selector Sweetie, will be spinning roots in the basement alongside Rodigan and Joey Jay.
Upstairs, the lounge will be hosted by The Doctor's Orders, where Spin Doctor, Chris P Cuts and Mo Fingaz will be dropping a beat-heavy selection of soul, funk and hip hop.
Every time we host a Rodigan night it's a capacity turnout, so as this is a really special night, we'd recommend arrival well before midnight.
The session starts at 9.00pm and runs until 3.30am.
Admission is £6 before 10pm, £8 thereafter. Some £5 early bird advance tickets are available from: http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/user/?region=gb_london&query=detail&event=525614&interface=
